A little bit of this, a little bit of that
Uch, finally updated http://mattrandl.es to be a more padded out landing page for a few main things :) So, most of my plans this year havn’t really come to fruition yet but i’m slowly sorting a lot of little things I want out.
JIRA = my new godsend, I love a decent issue tracker and have convinced work to begin using it. I’ve also moved to using it at home, so hopefully, with a...

Things i’m working on in 2011
Bizman - name due to change but put simple: a codeigniter app for managing a small business
CLH - wont reveal all but it’s in two parts. The first is a bunch of bash scripts, the other is a server built in node.js
Myself - the eternal pursuit to better myself and improve everything from linguistic skills and guitar proficiency to learning to enjoy my...

ebay phishing feckery
Well, I got bored the other night and decided to do a quick little test on the ebay uk sandbox and found some suprising results. By splitting up a script tag into a string you can easily write a script out to the page, to include other javascript files or various other things.
While this is all good and well for fancifying your ebay templates, it leaves the site vulnerable to phising attacks, I...

Weight Loss
I hesitantly post this here, but I’ve since removed my 2 weight loss blogs from existence
Back on 21st March 2009 I decided enough was enough, I had gained a lot of weight and put down a plan to loose it. The loose plan was:
2 Mile walk each morning Mon-Sat
Sensible breakfasts: usually weighed out All Bran and half a grapefruit
Sensible dinners: tomato’s on toast, soup and bread...

Finally getting to it
I’ve just finished clearing off a lot of items on the web I didn’t want there anymore. I’ve also re-jigged my online world into two tumblr blogs, one for personal and random finds - another for anything tech related!

happy new year
I can’t promise a triumphant return to the limited blogging I did, or even that I’ll be at the computer much past what I have to be for work. But I can give a list of new year hopes….
Make time to read more blog and technology news
Make time to learn new languages, both computer and linguistically speaking
Train myself to jog a 5k
Weight training to get rid of some skin

decisions
I’ve had many project idea’s over the past year but never done them for varying reasons - I’ve decided in these months running up to end of year, I need a project to work on that’s all mine (geeky development) … not only that I need new hosting, I’m thinking of moving to a vps or dirt cheap dedi after reading a blog by zef

FriendFeed vs Facebook
So, since 140 chars doesnt cut it, I thought I’d post here and link up!
Let me begin by saying I’ve gone through a few different services and had my ups and downs with all of them. At its most basic I used to be hooked on IRC channels then forums and msn etc, but thats not the type of service I’m on about.
I never did myspace, I just disliked it from the start for some reason....
its only 14 freaking days
Yeah, yet again I kept thinking to myself this week “do it, post that, get it out of your head” … but instead I put things off, forget and this thing get ignored. Im still posting at least a weekly post on eatlog.co.uk but I’m thinking of letting a few domains expire, and more than likely shoving all my sites into one domain, so I can post some of the things I want to...

Best laid plans....
So, for anyone who scoots past anything I post on, you will have noticed my few and far between posts. I’d like to give a decent reason other than either being busy or out of the house … but I have none!
I think Im going to update my site soon [finally] and put more relevant stuff on. Things I see and like, music i’m making with Mark, random covers with other people, things...

Just a short update, to test posting from my iPhone. I’ve failed to post often over the past few months… I hope to change this, as currently I have no vent for my
random findings… And I also haven’t vented on feelings and music. Trust me, there’s many things to vent on!

…Can I send it back?
That’s exactly what I wanted to say. I had about 10 really smartass things to say back. But I couldn’t. I was frozen. Speechless.
Zip back a few weeks. I had parted ways with Strands, and got the most amazing opportunity with GOGII in LA as Director of Community. Dream job.
A move to LA was imminent. But first, a trip home to Philly to visit the folks and...

Server building
Realised I hadn’t given an update on the home server situation. Well after getting the new case etc I found the board to be broken … didnt matter what OS I tried, the network wouldnt work, some sort of IRQ problem. After sending the board back it was confirmed broken and replaced within 6 days, not the fastest but the customer service was seemless to be fair.
Now, I’ve decided...

server build
So, my development server has hanged a few times over the past few months, then a few days ago it hanged, and refused to come back. Considering the age of the machine, unavailability of replacement parts and it looking like a motherboard problem, I opted for a new one!
I purchased myself a mini itx system with onboard 1.2ghz processor (fanless) and a gig of low profile ram. This server never runs...

development
I’ve done a lot of research this week. I’ve been thinking about optimization to reduce costs of hosting. In the past I’ve always been write once, refactor a gazillion times. For my current idea/project I’ve been thinking about optimization before starting, researching technologies to get an idea or where to start…
Anyway…. very quiet on here lately as a result...
slypoll
Yeah, been a heck of a long time since I did something good and showed it off a bit. Soon will be time, I’m working on (as a project) slypoll.com. I’ve just taken the existing site offline (keeping existing polls up till I finish playing).
There’s still a fair way to go, and this will be hosted on new hosting, so there’s that to sort as well. I might preview some bits on...

new blog theme
So, i got bored of the old one, tell the truth I’m bored of this one before I’m finished. It will be changing again without a doubt, I just wanted to move to a xhtml/css only theme, no images to host etc. Everything is now served from tumblr.
Looking to change a lot of things regarding web soon, I’d like to share more of the things I come across and the ideas I have.

holidays and ideas
So, I’ve had the last two weeks off from work and spent a week of that in Lanzarote. Got say I had a brilliantly relaxed time and come back brimming with ideas for projects, life, music etc etc.
Whilst away I did feel more cut off than I’d have liked but it gave me chance to just reflect on challenges from the last few months and how to move forward with them.
Looking forward I have...

number crunchin
The past few weeks i’ve been watching @stephenfry’s follower number increase, then after his appearance on @wossy’s program on bbc1 (UK) I noticed the numbers shoot up. More interestingly I’ve noticed it compared to other top people on twitter see here. and I have to wonder where most of Stephen Fry’s followers come from. On the top list, if we ignore...

Chillax Time
So, its been a while since the last post on here. The reason is simple - mega stupidly busy! Luckily, I now have two weeks off from work, going to Lanzarote for a week on thursday.
Really excited about my holiday now, but I’m also already planning my next holiday. My friends and I are going to Cape Town (South Africa) in June for two weeks; should be awesome.

new year begins
After being ill over christmas I was kind of lethargic this week, and im paying for it now by catching up with things and trying to re-do biig mistakes i couldnt afford to make.
But on the upside one side-thingy is going well, if you know it, cool, if you dont, i’ll reveal it at some point.

playing with twitter
I recently had a go of pixly, a twitter combat game which yet again requires a user to log on using twitter credentials. This got me thinking, could it be done without needing the users login? The answer is yes. Using the json public methods its possible to grab a tweeter’s friend list on the client side, which could easily be sent back to the server, requiring only a cookie to track a few...

new year, projects, gaps
So everyone’s already said Happy New Year, i’ll leave this sentence as equivalent. The past few months have been fair busy with various bits of side-project ideas and I’ve let some things slip. Most of my side project idea’s end up being private applications for me, I may release a few this year if I clean them up and probably open source them, as I don’t really have...

Following habits
(and by following habits i mean twitter, strands, friendfeed, tumblr, google reader) So, again I’m seeing conflicts in the tech space and there’s a clear line which separates the pack. On one side we have the number crowd, they try to sniff out the latest and greatest to try and be associated with it, they don’t really care what ‘it’ is, just as long as they can show...

conflicts and arguments
Before i go any futher, this is just a general observation, not a heavily researched piece of babble.
It seems to me that over the last few months the industry (and by industry i mean development / web2.0) has been getting more and more divided. I follow a fair few things on twitter but mainly i hammer through a hell of a lot of rss feeds in my google reader for my information and news. What...
Hosting and Media
Im currently looking at hosting to move an existing project to, need something scalable with a lot of control over apache config … think i may have to start with a virtual machine?
Also got my invite to test Windows Azure - so thats some of my time tomorrow gone already.
Short and sweet update, also got a few song ideas, will try and remember to write them down!
pownce, strands, geek
So, yet again I’ve been ignoring some geek stuff.
First off, pownce.com closing on the 15th? Well, I haven’t used it much in the last few months but its still gutted to see something like that go down then be closed.
But, with the downing of pownce I’m hoping to see more people hit strands.com and as such Ive been sending a few messages around on pownce telling people they can...

New Laptop, well, netbook
so, i almost bought an iphone then desided to hold off for now. Instead I started looking at other net devices and decided that, although i love my laptop, its usually left on the desk - so maybe a second laptop was a good idea..
Anyway, after futher thought i then decided a laptop, while portable isnt quite as small as i wanted, yet the average umpc allways seem, well, crap. Then i saw it, the...
