1. FriendFeed vs Facebook

So, since 140 chars doesnt cut it, I thought I’d post here and link up!

Let me begin by saying I’ve gone through a few different services and had my ups and downs with all of them. At its most basic I used to be hooked on IRC channels then forums and msn etc, but thats not the type of service I’m on about.

I never did myspace, I just disliked it from the start for some reason. I did join facebook, and loved it but I prefer flickr etc for photos and dislike the integration possibilities. Then of course there’s twitter, which I still use, its great to see links flying past and I have my second account which has helped me keep track of my food and loose weight. After that, there was pownce, which I loved untill it shut down, even tho it seemed innevitable as messages slowed.

I used strands for a while when Drew O was championing their cause - but as the focus of the site changed it didnt suit what I was after (my focus may have changed now, but thats for another blog). I also joined FriendFeed - which I’m still on and finally i’m getting to the point of this post….

I must admit, i’m slightly worried over any merger / takeover / selling of Friendfeed, its not a problem with Facebook. I personally feel, friendfeed has grown greatly, improved loads and has a good feature set - but I was excited to see where they would head with the service and what unique offerings they could bring to the table!

My worry is that the merger will end up with Facebook eating up Friendfeed, some features going into Facebook, some being left and that Friendfeed will either chug along for a long time or eventually disolve.

But, on the flipside I’m also eager to hear / read / watch all the interviews and news bits over this next week to see what others have to say and see if i’ve miss-judged the situation completely

  2. its only 14 freaking days

Yeah, yet again I kept thinking to myself this week “do it, post that, get it out of your head” … but instead I put things off, forget and this thing get ignored. Im still posting at least a weekly post on eatlog.co.uk but I’m thinking of letting a few domains expire, and more than likely shoving all my sites into one domain, so I can post some of the things I want to …. I also wana make it easier to post stuff I like, rather than wondering if repeating from tumblr twitter friendfeed etc etc is a bit excessive

  3. Best laid plans….

So, for anyone who scoots past anything I post on, you will have noticed my few and far between posts. I’d like to give a decent reason other than either being busy or out of the house … but I have none!

I think Im going to update my site soon [finally] and put more relevant stuff on. Things I see and like, music i’m making with Mark, random covers with other people, things I’m working on and most importantly just sharing in general.

Theres a few people who I think lighten up the day via twitter, and I’d love to start listing here, but I’d rather post it on a new site thats always noticable… supersimbo gives me the idea for that - and to be fair he’d probably be up near the top of the list.

  4. Iphonenessnessness

Just a short update, to test posting from my iPhone. I’ve failed to post often over the past few months… I hope to change this, as currently I have no vent for my random findings… And I also haven’t vented on feelings and music. Trust me, there’s many things to vent on!

  8. That’s not what I ordered…

    drew:

    …Can I send it back?

That’s exactly what I wanted to say.  I had about 10 really smartass things to say back.  But I couldn’t.  I was frozen.  Speechless.

Zip back a few weeks.  I had parted ways with Strands, and got the most amazing opportunity with GOGII in LA as Director of Community.  Dream job.

A move to LA was imminent.  But first, a trip home to Philly to visit the folks and friends on the east coast.   I hadn’t gotten to see them much.

I noticed a lump on my neck.   Not huge, but being that I’m in lots of pictures and perhaps may look at myself in the mirror a bit, it was noticeable.   I talked to my mom about, she’s a nurse.   She suggested it could be anything.  An infection, etc. etc.

On my trip home to Philly I decided to stop in to see my family Dr.  Hadn’t seen him in a while, plus I wanted to get rid of whatever I had.

He ordered a CTscan and bloodwork immediately.  Again, could be anything.   Plus I had no symptoms, no sore throat, aches, nothing.   Good stuff.

The CTscan showed a mass in my neck and chest.   He passed me on to a wonderful Oncologist.  He ordered a lymph node removal and biopsy.

Less than a week later, I got a diagnosis.

    Hodgkins Lymphoma.

I said nothing as the Dr. told me.   I was prepared for anything or nothing, but mostly the worst case scenario, since I’m a bit of a hypochondriac.

Tests were ordered to “stage” the Hodgkins.   A week went by with a few tests…heart scan, lung test, PETscan, bone marrow biopsy (ow. for reals).

Stage 3, the Oncologist told me before I got my first chemo treatment yesterday.   One of 12 over 6 months.   Every 2 weeks.

    I have Cancer.

Before I was staged, I spoke with a friend of mine about it and shared an idea I had for a site called BlameDrewsCancer.   See, I am trying to stay lighthearted and optimistic that since studies show that Hodgkins Lymphoma is 90% curable…I should do SOMETHING.

I’ve been blaming my cancer for everything.  Lost keys, wallet, Phillies losing.   Sixers picking a bad coach.   Twitter going down and/or being slow.

Surely cancer can’t withstand that type of beatdown.  But why do it alone?  I wanted to welcome ANYONE to blame ANYTHING on MY cancer.   I’ll find a nice company or a few who will match each unique person on Twitter who blames something on my cancer using the hashtag #BlameDrewsCancer, with a dollar that will go to the American Cancer Society and Make a Wish Foundation.

    My life is changed forever.

I have cancer, but cancer doesn’t have me.

I also have the best family, friends, colleagues, and co-workers any person could ever wish for.

I will win.  And I will dedicate all I have in me to help others who are far worse off than I am, and I will do what I do…educate.

Cancer discussion upsets some people, makes them uncomfortable.  It is nothing to run away from.  Medicine is amazing these days.  Technology is amazing.

I will share my experiences here on my blog.

And if my blog ever goes down….then I’m just going to #BlameDrewsCancer

  9. Server building

Realised I hadn’t given an update on the home server situation. Well after getting the new case etc I found the board to be broken … didnt matter what OS I tried, the network wouldnt work, some sort of IRQ problem. After sending the board back it was confirmed broken and replaced within 6 days, not the fastest but the customer service was seemless to be fair.

Now, I’ve decided not to run virtual machines on it (yet) as I like the fact its silent, not getting under strain for long periods of time and doesnt need a load of case fans to keep the air flowing! But I have set up a few things on there ready to get going on a few projects!

“A new iPhone app called Email ‘N Walk replaces the plain white background of the e-mail application with a live view of the camera. Why? So you can write an e-mail while walking — and watch where you’re going through the iPhone’s camera lens. Good thing they didn’t call it “Email ‘N Drive”!” (via The Raw Feed: iPhone App shows camera view during e-mail)
