conflicts and arguments
Before i go any futher, this is just a general observation, not a heavily researched piece of babble.
It seems to me that over the last few months the industry (and by industry i mean development / web2.0) has been getting more and more divided. I follow a fair few things on twitter but mainly i hammer through a hell of a lot of rss feeds in my google reader for my information and news. What i’ve been noticing is that where as there used to be a general vibe, with a few minor differences toward a new story - its now getting to a point where everyone has a conflicting opinion.
Maybe its the big economy problem? Is it forcing our views to be more critising? Are people trying to back a few major players to keep them steady? I’m not sure what’s going on but recently I noticed these opinions becoming very catty (bitchy or whatever you want to call it). The most obvious case was Mr Arrington over at techcrunch getting a lot of bad publicity for his comment. I dont agree with them but i get the impression that 3 months ago they wouldnt have sounded so harsh and people would have tried to point him in the right direction… Instead we got a poll asking people should he not be invited back to Le Web next year.
Other things that piss me off lately?
- People complaining when somewhere doesnt offer wifi or there’s problems with it? pffft, be glad your getting anythign in this economy, buy a 3g card for your laptop or get an iphone if you so desperatly need to tweet every 5 minutes.
- People complaining about site’s going down under load - give them a break, if your paying a subscription, complain, if its a free site thats up the rest of the time you go there - start a self help group and stop filling my screen with “FAIL”.
- Then there’s some of the bitchy posts I saw on Pownce about it closing. I dont think the team sold out, the site didnt get the audience they wanted, they gave us pro users a typepad voucher worth more than a pro account and pointed the free people to other usefull places - they did what they had to do to secure their livelihood and im hoping bring some new things to SixAppart.
- Hmmm what else, oh there’s the countless sites telling me how startups are failing - how about giving some good advice and pointing toward services that can help startups? We know there’s a problem - dont just state the obvious, give readers some usefull information about how sun help startups, or maybe publicise cloud computing such as mosso more (personally had a slow experience but once its a bit more mature that thing rocks for the cost!)
I’ll stop rather than rant any futher and go have a caffeine filled drink and chill…
