Following habits
(and by following habits i mean twitter, strands, friendfeed, tumblr, google reader)
So, again I’m seeing conflicts in the tech space and there’s a clear line which separates the pack. On one side we have the number crowd, they try to sniff out the latest and greatest to try and be associated with it, they don’t really care what ‘it’ is, just as long as they can show they are close and in turn have people following them. I’m not against these, as recession hit’s people are looking to secure their place. But I’m not on this side either, I’m on the other. The other side is the hacker crowd, and by hacker I mean the people who care about technology, who have a thirst and drive to see and do new things with existing equipment, and to quickly disassemble new tech to see how its driven.
The key piece in that last convoluted paragraph is recession, the number crowd are trying to make their bacon safe - but in doing so I’m less likely to follow them. The reason is they may give me the information that the hacker crowd gives me - but they don’t seem to care as much about it. They give me the impression they want me to read it but not be involved with it. The hacker crowd however, being more in depth give me a passion to socialize with the technology, more likely to try out what’s being reported and come back to that source for more news.
Now before anyone looks at the people I visibly follow and points out the obvious - I also follow people who give me random tid-bits of life and often nothing tech related. I’m human, and as such like a human touch to my geek life.
I’m not religious and don’t believe in, well, anything, but I follow a few who are and they are great people with a lot of warmth and information to offer my day.
I’m not a photo-nerd or politics-whore but i also follow people who give me brilliant pictures in my feed and passionate links to daily news life.
It seems to me too many people on the various services are worried too much about follower numbers, if you want me to follow you, be yourself and give a piece of yourself, be it geek, nerd, news, religion or life. If you want to follow me, feel free, I may reciprocate but I don’t mind if you find what I offer bland or too random - I only post what I feel something about.
